Red Sand Project and kNOw MORE at Crawford
How can students bring awareness and advocate for the victims of human trafficking?
Grade 10
Overview: Students participated in the Red Sand Project, a nationwide project in which participants spread red sand in concrete cracks to represent the suffering of those who are being trafficked worldwide. Prior, the students studied six different categories of human trafficking and created group speeches.
Project Initiation: The project launch began with a study of human trafficking worldwide. Students researched and created presentations, as well as participated in the Red Sand Project, a nationwide project with the intention of raising awareness of human trafficking. A representative from the Red Sand Project met with the students and photographed our participation. The students will next participate in the kNOw MORE Human Trafficking Prevention Curriculum with representatives and actors from kNOw MORE.
Project Exploration and Development: The students researched human trafficking, created Google slides as visuals for their speeches and presented their findings. Working in small groups, they became the experts in one category of human trafficking and then taught other students. We read narratives and viewed Ted Talks. The students decided to participate in the Red Sand Project and not only poured the red sand in our cement cracks, but were chosen to be photographed/videoed by a Red Sand Project representative. The students also added their photos to the hashtag and connected with others nationwide. The kNOw MORE project, originally scheduled prior to the Red Sand Project was postponed, and students will participate in this experience on May 2nd with representatives and professional actors from kNOw MORE.
Project Revision and Exhibition: The student presentations required participation of the entire class with audience members taking notes and asking questions. Presenters had the opportunity to add information and to evaluate each other. All students reflected on their own participation and product as well. They revised their visuals (slides) additionally for the student-created display that informed the campus about our participation in the Red Sand Project. Most exciting was the actual participation and end product.
