From Sugar to Heroin: Preventing Substance Use in Our Community
How do chemical and/or natural substances affect individual human behaviors and bodily functions, as well as society as a whole?
Grade 9
Overview: Substance abuse is a big deal in San Diego, and it impacts not only the individual using the substance, but their family and the community at large. Formerly known as “The Meth Capital of the World,” substance abuse in San Diego is all too common, and knowledge about this can save lives.
Project Initiation: Students will first hear from Industry Professionals in a guest speaker series "launch." In addition, students will research the physical, social, emotional, economic and the cultural impacts of that substance along with information the community needs to know to prevent or stem abuse, while partnering with our Industry Professionals who will serve as mentors for our students along the way. Our intended audience will be all those in attendance at our Town Hall on 5/20/22.
Project Exploration and Development: Students engaged in Standards-Based learning for English and CTE. Students worked with teachers to form their interdisciplinary Triad teams. Students reflected on each of their components to the project along the way and at the end of the project with the following deliverables: 1-Substance Proposal, 2-Notes for Guest Speaker Series, 3-Infographic/QR Code, 4-Overview of Substance, 5-Interactive Visual of the Human Body affected by your substance, 6-Rhetorical Precis, 7-Recorded Presentation, 8-Website, 9-Town Hall. We launched our project with a week-long guest speaker series, and concluded our project with a Student-Led Community Town Hall in partnership with SAY SD. In addition, students took an interactive concluding field trip to the SD County Behavioral Health Services Offices.
Project Revision and Exhibition: Students will work with our Guest Speakers and Industry Partner SAY SD, for revision and practice with their WEBPAGE that includes: 1-Substance Proposal, 2-Notes for Guest Speaker Series, 3-Infographic/QR Code, 4-Overview of Substance, 5-Interactive Visual of the Human Body affected by your substance, 6-Rhetorical Precis, 7-Recorded Presentation, 8-Website, 9-Town Hall on 5/20/22.
