This course is designed to be the equivalent of a introductory one-semester college course in environmental science. The goal of the class is to provide students with the scientific principles, concepts and methodologies required to understand the interrelationships of the natural world, to identify analyze environmental problems both natural and man-made, to evaluate the relative risks associated with these problems, and to examine alternative solutions for resolving and/or preventing them. It includes the study of various science content areas including geology, biology, environmental studies, chemistry, and geography. However the emphasis of the class is to view these topics from a sociological and political perspective. The study of environmental science supports a large variety of careers including but not limited to environmen- tal lawyers, soil science technicians, community recycling program managers, property analysts and toxicologists.
