About Gyalpozhing College of Information Technology (GCIT)
Gyalpozhing College of Information Technology (GCIT) is a premier institution under the Royal University of Bhutan, dedicated to advancing technological education and fostering innovation. Officially inaugurated on October 6, 2017, GCIT was established with a vision to become a “Center of Excellence in Information Technology,” reflecting a commitment to the principles of Gross National Happiness (GNH). Initially located just 24 kilometers from Mongar town, the college has since relocated to a state-of-the-art campus in Kabjisa, Chamjekha, Thimphu. This move signifies not just a change in location but a transformation into a vibrant hub for advanced learning, catering to an expanding student body and a diverse array of academic programs.
Since its inception, GCIT has experienced rapid growth, starting with an enrollment of 79 students in the Bachelor of Computer Applications program. The college swiftly expanded its offerings in 2018 by introducing a Bachelor of Science program, which led to a significant increase in both faculty and student numbers. By incorporating additional courses such as Computer Science and Information Technology, GCIT ensures that its educational portfolio remains comprehensive and relevant. The institution is committed to nurturing creativity, critical thinking, and ethical responsibility, aligning its mission seamlessly with the Royal University of Bhutan’s policies and the national government’s vision for youth empowerment through skill development and innovation.
In its pursuit of excellence, GCIT emphasizes a project-based learning approach, equipping students with the skills needed to thrive in a rapidly evolving global landscape. The establishment of two main schools—the School of Computing (SOC) and the School of Interactive Design and Development (SIDD)—allows for a more focused educational experience. Recent developments, including the inauguration of a new campus and groundbreaking research initiatives in fields such as artificial intelligence, data science, and cybersecurity, position GCIT at the forefront of the information technology sector in Bhutan. Through its dedication to educational excellence, community engagement, and innovative thinking, GCIT serves as a beacon of opportunity for students aspiring to excel in technology and make meaningful contributions to society.
