Geometric Shadows

Nor'easter

The subject of this image is a Nissan leaf. The image was taken from inside a carport with one wall open. It was taken during a storm so the snow came inside the carport. This image was made using the lights in the car port. The assignment was to take photos of shadows and I have always loved the shadows around that carport during snowstorms so I thought this was a great chance to explore the idea. I took a couple of photos in this area before thinking about the idea of a reflection. I saw the shadow off the post first and then realized that I could capture that shadow twice by incorporating it into the reflection. I liked the leading line of the car and the rule of thirds that the car created. The post was important in the photo because it took up some of the massive blank space and provided the source of the shadow. When I realized what I wanted the photo to be of I decided to take a few photos from different angles. I took a few standing up but I didn't like how they turned out I finally decided to get down low for the photo. Ever since I was young I have played on my driveway under the lights during snow storms. My family shovels out the walkways and sets the snow up so that they plow guy can take it all in one hit. The shadows and snow have always had a mystical feeling as a result. I wanted to capture that but because I didn't have a tripod I couldn't get a good long exposure of the snow and the light. The incorporation of the electric car certainly to me signals the future and how that change is imminent. A change which I am very excited. I think this image would have been a lot stronger if I had used a tripod. I would have been able to make the shadows more crisp. As it was, there was some blur so I used an ice pane filter to complement the storm and get rid of the annoying blur.
