14. Final piece - Inclusion Design

ARTIST STATEMENT:

The subject of this piece is a large pair of wings in the center of the page. They are spread wide, with the words 'We all have the same wings' in the center. This piece was mostly digital, although I did draw the original wings on paper with pencil. I choose to create this specific piece because I was low on ideas and I decided to use my new knowledge on ow to draw wings to draw a new pair, and make them out to be like angel wings. Honestly, I just winged the background (no pun intended), putting whatever I thought looked good down.

A composition technique I used in this piece is formal balance in the wings. This can be seen in the fact that there are two, almost equal wings on either side, balancing out the whole picture. Originally, I only had the idea for the wings and the words and I was going to leave it at that. But when I finished those, the background looked very plain. So, I played around with various tools in photoshop, one of the big ones being the gradient tool. In total, there are three different gradients in this piece.

The meaning I see behind this piece is the wings being seen as either angel wings or as a metaphor for the phrase 'Spread your wings'. It shows that everyone has the potential to 'spread their wings' and find something they like. After all, we are all human, despite a disability. This project doesn't much relate to me, except for the obvious 'I like drawing wings' again. The only difference is I've improved my style of wings, and they look a lot more realistic and soft now, instead of the old very sharp feathers. I think this piece could use work and more of a specific path in the background, as I think it's a bit too busy and everywhere.
