08. American Flag redesign

ARTIST STATEMENT:

The assignment for this project was to take the parts of the American flag (colors, patterns, all that) and make it into something else that wasn't the flag. So, my choice of redesign was a pair of wings, as they are naturally a very patriotic thing and I really enjoy drawing wings on my own, so it seemed like a good fit. The original materials I used to make this were just regular pencil and paper, and I then took a picture of the sketch and put that into photoshop. I then used my drawing tablet to draw in all the lines and colors, giving it a better image. Something that I had to use in this art was the element of art shape, and this is used in the stars specifically, as the pattern of the stars matches with the flag, which we were replicating to a certain extent. Wings are also one of my favorite things to draw and I find myself doodling wings over and over again, making this something I really had fun with.

One of the big, prominent composition rules I used in this piece is formal balance. This is seen in the wings themselves, as both sides have the same design and general idea and both wings are wings (they are a pair). At the beginning of this project, I was planning to use paints on paper, and not even touch digital, but when I went to draw a simple sketch to start out a design, it ended up being what I wanted and I didn't want to change the sketch, so I decided I would play with my digital tools more and I put it in photoshop.

This image doesn't really relate to my life much, as I'm not a very patriotic person. The only thing that relates to me at all is the fact that I really like drawing wings always. Something I'd redo about this project if I could, is I'd change the wing style a little, as they look really flat and the feathers are a little off.
