03. Time capsule drawings

ARTIST STATEMENT:

This artwork is a collection of drawings we had to do as a 'marker' of sorts to measure how far we are now, to when we finish this class. I just used a graphite pencil and eraser for this project. On the first thing, the eye, our assignment was to create a cropped self portrait. I choose to draw my eye, as I really enjoy drawing eyes normally, and it's one of the things I like most about my face. The second image is a drawing of my hallway. Our assignment on that one was to draw a perspective drawing of a hallway, and I choose to do the one on the way to my room, as it's one of my favorites. The third image is a drawing of my hand in an odd position, as that was the assignment. I choose that position to draw, as that is an emoji that I use pretty often (and I don't use emoji's much). Then, the last image is a drawing of my laptop, as our assignment said we had to draw something we rely on, and I rely on my laptop almost daily for schoolwork, music and entertainment.

One of the only Composition rules and techniques shown in these images is 'leading line'. In the eye drawing, the eyebrow and nose line both lead your eye to the drawn eye and in the second one, the lines of the floorboards lead your eye to the end of the hall. Not really much of these pictures changed from idea to image, except the hand drawing. Originally, I wanted to draw my hand holding my thinking putty, but when I went to draw, I lost the container briefly, so i had to improvise.

All the things drawn in this piece are representing me in a way. As explained above, my eyes are my favorite part of my face, that hallway is my favorite, that hand position is something I use a lot, and my laptop is something I use even more. I think a lot of things in this piece could be strengthened. I think the proportions in the hall could be fixed, the proportions and general structure in the hand could be fixed, and I think the perspective on the laptop needs to be fixed as well.
