Relief Portrait

Artists Statement:

This is a portrait of my sister. I chose her because my sister is a really important person in my life and I chose that picture because she is smiling. My sister is most of the time smiling. She sees the good things in people and when she comes in room you can't be sad because her smile makes everybody happy.

My sister loves the nature and she loves it to be outside. So I made the portrait out of branches, leaves and needles. At first I glued the leaves on and then the needles. I glued both with white glue. After that I attached the branches with hot glue. The branches are showing the hairs of my sister. I really like the branches because it makes the portrait more interesting, it makes it 3 dimensional and it shows movement. Overall I really like the texture of the portrait.

It was hard to show details in the face but I tried my best. I think the sculpture is also really balanced. I added through the time more branches to the hairs. I think that made it also more balanced.

I learned that it isn't that hard to work with branches. It is way harder to work with the needles. It took me a long time to glue them on and to get them stay at the right place. However, it was still a lot of fun!
