head bust

Artists Statement:

This project started with creating a bust armature with clay. I started with forming the headform. After that, I sculpted the shoulders and the neck. The facial features was the next step. It was really important to compare it with the photos because it should be as real as possible. Than it was time to slowly dry the sculpture. After the sculpture got burned I painted it with watercolors and acrylic paint. My last step was putting the wire in the holes to create the mustache.

This project was one of my favourite projects. If you not already realised, that is Salvador DalĂ. He is an amazing artist and he painted awesome surrealist paintings. I tried to paint a part of his most famous painting on his suit. I really like the value of the melting clocks and the value of his shirt and tie.

It was difficult to get color in all the cracks but I tried to use a lot of water and it worked pretty good. The facial features were difficult, too. We see ourself everyday in the mirror and you should think that you know how to sculpt eyes or ears but it is actually really difficult.

I like that the bust is not balanced. The head is off centre and I think that makes it really interesting and surreal. The bust is also surreal because the head is upside down and the suit has drawers. I think that makes the bust really fun to look at.
