SAT/ACT Must-Do List

1. Review the basics. For the math section of the SAT, review basic arithmetic, algebra, and geometry. For the ACT you will also need to know some trigonometry. Both tests will have reading comprehension questions; the ACT will stress grammar, while the SAT will test mainly vocabulary.

2. Learn the specific techniques. Learn good test-taking techniques. Good resources are test-prep books or test preparation websites.

3. Apply the techniques. Take timed practice tests and analyze your answers. This will help you evaluate your strengths and weaknesses.

4. Study in a comfortable environment. Studying where you are comfortable will boost your confidence and make the test seem less intimidating.

5. Stick to a serious study plan. Set up a consistent schedule that allows you to study for your test.

6. Guess: On both the SAT and the ACT, you do not lose points for wrong answers, so guessing is okay.

Avoid...

1. Reading the types of questions for the first time on test day. Familiarize yourself with the format of the test before test day using practice resources.

2. Rushing. On the SAT the last three questions of the section are always the hardest (with the exception of the Critical Reading passages). Do the easiest questions first.

4. Getting stuck. Answer all of the questions you feel sure about first; go back and attempt the rest of the questions later.

5. Ignoring answer choices. Look at all of the choices before answering your question.
