The objective of this course is to help students gain an understanding of the history and culture of the people who live in the area of the world known as The Middle East. We start out exploring the geography of this part of the world and then learn about the history, different religions, food, and social customs of the region. Emphasis is on trying to dispel various stereotypes of The Middle East to get a more nuanced and complete understanding of the people. Students will also learn about the various historical connections between the United States and several of the Middle Eastern countries in order to understand current political relationships. The class includes discussion of current events, weekly readings, videos, writing assignments and a final project.
