The unit on substance misuse provides students an understanding of substance misuse, factors contributing to substance misuse, impact on mental health, and prevention and treatment. Students learn about the different types of substances and their impact on physical and mental health, as well as the factors that contribute to substance misuse (i.e., childhood trauma). They should also learn about the connection between substance misuse and mental health conditions such as depression. The unit should also include strategies for preventing substance misuse and different types of treatment available for substance misuse (i.e., healthy coping).
