The unit on social determinants of health covers the definition and examples of social determinants, their impact on health outcomes and the role they play in creating health disparities. Additionally, the unit provides strategies for addressing social determinants, and the intersectionality of social determinants with other factors. By understanding these concepts, students develop a better understanding of the complex social and economic factors that impact health and mental health outcomes. Lastly, the unit provides insight on how to improve community health equity.
SDOH Defined. Students learn what social determinants of health are, and how social determinants that can impact health outcomes.
Health Impacts. Students learn about how social determinants of health can impact health outcomes, such as increasing the risk of chronic diseases as well as how they can lead to health disparities between different social groups.
Addressing SDOH. Students learn about strategies for addressing social determinants of health as well as the role that organizations, providers, and institutions play in addressing social determinants.
Intersectionality. Students learn how social determinants of health can intersect with other social factors creating additional barriers to good health outcomes.
