Did you know that the average American will spend 42 hours per year waiting in traffic?
Consider carpooling to help cut down on emissions and road congestion. Maricopa employees who register at https://sharetheride.com/ with their MCCCD email address are also entered to win prizes and rewards.
Employees who carpool are also eligible for premium parking in our parking garage. Contact Rio Salado College Police at 480-377-4557 to gain access to this unique parking pass.
Valley Metro runs a great Van Pool program that allows 6-15 people save time, money, and personal vehicle wear & tear by starting a Van Pool together.
Users pay a monthly fee based on round-trip mileage to use vans that are owned, maintained, and insured by Valley Metro to commute as a group to work. This allows users to save time by using the HOV lane on the freeway, while also saving the carbon emissions that would be released during single-occupancy vehicle commutes.
Details for this program are available at Valley Metro's website, including how to get started.
Sharing a ride with a coworker is not the only way to cut down the 42 hours you will spend in traffic this year. Depending on your department's needs and peak operating hours, you may be able to set up an alternate work schedule with your supervisor.
Schedules such as 6 AM - 3 PM or 10 AM - 7 PM help to cut down on emissions by limiting the time your vehicle is operating. Instead of sitting in traffic for an additional 10 minutes, you will be able to travel in lighter traffic and arrive to your destinations in a fraction of the time.
Employees who use public transportation are able to take advantage of MCCCD's Transit Subsidy by obtaining a discounted Transit Pass. This subsidy reduces the price of a 31-day Valley Metro pass from $64 down to $32, and is good for use on Valley Metro busses and the light rail.
This program is available for employees who work 25 hours or more per week, and who commute to a MCCCD worksite at least two days per week. To purchase this discounted pass, please reach out to the Rio contact below:

The Trip Reduction Program encourages employees to reduce single occupant vehicle trips. Why drive alone when you can gain more with an alternate mode of transportation? Improve air quality, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, decrease congestion, and reduce noise pollution. Plus, enjoy savings on your time and vehicle maintenance.
Step 1: Create an account
Visit ShareTheRide.com and click "Register" at the top right corner
Step 2: Add your commute
Enter your home address and worksite address as your commute
Step 3: Log your trips
Scroll down to the box below "My Commutes" labelled "Log Your Trips". This is where you can enter your commutes to and from work daily, including teleworking.
Step 4: Get rewarded
In addition to MCCCD's TRP prizes, you can also enter prize drawings on Share the Ride that you are eligible for. Some prize drawings require certain modes of transportation, while others only track the number of alternative trips to single occupancy vehicles.
The Maricopa County Air Quality Department administers an annual survey to assess our district's progress regarding our Trip Reduction Plan.
We are required to complete the survey in order to be compliant with state law, but it also assists us in determining how we can best help our students and employees meet their transportation needs while also reducing single-occupant vehicle trips.
The annual Trip Reduction Program survey period began on October 1st and will be open till Dec 1st.
A minimum 60% response rate is required. Failure to comply will result in a daily fine for the location that does not meet the response rate. Your help is crucial to Maricopa's success.
Arizona law (A.R.S. §49-588 B) requires all employers in Area A with 100 or more employees at a single work site to notify their employees of the Vehicle Emissions Inspection Program (VEIP) requirements (A.R.S. §49-542).
The Maricopa County Travel Reduction Program is providing the accompanying notification as a way to inform employees of their responsibility to comply with Arizona VEIP laws.
Both an English and a Spanish version of the notification have been provided.
