A temporary employee is also known as an RPS employee.
In the MCCCD, there are two ways that an employee may be categorized as "temporary": based on schedule, and based on employment duration.
All part-time employees are categorized as temporary employees.
This is because the part-time position is an At-Will position, meaning the college/District and the employee can terminate the employment at any time.
Part-time employees are limited in the hours that they can work in a week. At Rio Salado College, part-time employees can put in no more than 19.5 hours per week.
The only exception to this policy is during "peak" weeks for the college, which are marked on the employee calendars. During these weeks, certain departments may authorize their part-time employees to work up to 40 hours to better serve our students during these higher traffic times.
All part-time employees are categorized as temporary, but this does not mean that all temporary positions are part-time.
There are some positions that are considered temporary in duration and that can be either part-time or full-time.
These positions are truly temporary in nature, and have a fixed period for employment. If you fall into this employment category, you will have been made aware of this period during your onboarding process.
