Non-exempt employees may be referred to by a few different titles in the Maricopa District. A few different terms you will hear include:
PSA ("Professional Staff Association")
Non-Exempt
Hourly
All of these terms are linked to the same employee type: regular, full-time employees who work hourly.
This group is not exempt from overtime compensation.
They will receive overtime pay or comp hours for any time worked over 40 hours*.
* Please note: Overtime pay or comp time hours must be approved in advance by an employee's supervisor. No employee may accrue more than 120 hours of compensatory time. An employee shall be paid for all overtime hours once the employee reaches the 120-hour maximum (see Staff Policy Manual A43 B2 c).
For hourly employees, working over 40 hours per week is considered to be overtime.
It is imperative that you discuss with your supervisor if you think you will need to work overtime before you do. They will need to approve you working overtime or earning comp hours.
Equivalent to 1.5 hours overtime pay for every 1 hour worked above 40**
** This only accounts for the hours worked above 40.
Equivalent to 1.5 hours paid time off for every 1 hour worked above 40**.
"Comp" is short for "compensatory".
You will hear it shortened like this more often than not.
An employee works 42 hours one week.
They are paid for 40 hours at their regular hourly rate, PLUS the additional 2 hours x 1.5 their hourly rate as overtime.
The employee therefore earns 3 hours of overtime pay for working 42 hours that week.
An employee works for 42 hours one week.
They are paid for 40 hours at their regular hourly rate, and have earned 2 x 1.5 hours as paid time off (3 hours total in this example).
The employee therefore earns 3 hours of comp time that can be used in the future for working 42 hours that week.
* Please note: Overtime pay or comp time hours must be approved in advance by an employee's supervisor.
As an employee in this group, you are expected to read the policies and procedures in these two manual and understand how they affect you and your role as an MCCCD employee.
