Third Graders are learning a lot about electromagnetism: magnetism developed by a current of electricity. Our lab involved building a circuit with a battery, wire, and an iron nail. Students conducted an experiment and followed a procedure of wrapping a certain number of coils of wire around a nail. Students then tested for magnetism using paperclips and recorded their observations. The next test involved building a circuit while attaching both ends of the wire to the battery holder. It was very exciting to see the nail become magnetized through electricity! Our magnetized nails attracted some paperclips with the help of electricity…30 coils…next 50 coils!! We counted at least 17 paperclips being attracted with 50 coils—Amazing!.. Electromagnetism is fun!
