This was great fun learning about the separation of mixtures in different ink pens. Fifth grade has been learning a lot about mixtures and solutions, and we have also learned about compounds and solvents. Today we used water as our solvent to learn more about chromatography..the separation of mixtures! We conducted an experiment with four different black ink markers to determine a message written by the “mystery marker.” We also used black jelly beans, water, and coffee filters as a secondary activity to view the process of chromatography.
