What will a magnet attract?

Second graders are learning about magnets and magnetic attraction: a force that pushes or pulls and makes some things move toward a magnet. We are learning that this force makes magnets attract metal, and we know that the magnetic force is strongest at two ends the North and South poles. We also have discovered that opposite poles attract and like poles repel. Students followed the scientific method by exploring a bag of items…then we began with a question: What objects will a magnet attract? We then made predictions for each item before testing with magnets. Students then conducted an experiment with three magnets: bar, round, and horseshoe magnets. After testing each bag item for magnetism, we drew conclusions… What a surprise that some of our predictions were not correct!...Exploring magnets is such fun!
