Fifth grade is enjoying learning about force and motion. We are exploring how friction affects the movement of a magnet along a path. Students know that magnets pull on all things made of iron and either push or pull on other magnets. During science lab, we discussed the force of friction…We are experimenting and discovering that when friction is reduced, an object can be moved with less force. We also discovered that when friction is increased, an object is moved with greater force. Students explored forceful friction with two main factors that affect the amount of friction from a moving magnet:

1. The smoothness of a surface over which the magnet moves – if a smooth surface – friction is reduced – magnet moves easier

Fifth grade conducted an experiment testing the force of friction by using ring magnets to move along a path. We tested the friction of the moving magnets with a sheet protector and also with a thin book. Students then explored a few new surfaces to test the force of friction: wax paper, tin foil, paper napkin, sand paper, plastic, and felt. Making new discoveries with force and motion is fun!
