First grade learned about a very important organ: the human heart! We have been learning a lot about the body systems, and today students explored the circulatory system. First graders are becoming scientific experts while following the scientific method. Our question today was, “How does the heart work?” We explored our question by viewing a heart model. Partners worked together with the heart models to pump the heart muscle and watch the blood flow through the veins and arteries! We also learned that the heart has a left side and a right side, and that there are four main parts of the heart: right atrium, right ventricle, left atrium, and left ventricle. Most importantly, the heart has a major artery the aorta! First graders understand that the heart is a muscle and that it pumps blood all over our bodies. The blood that the heart pumps travels through veins and arteries and carries oxygen and nutrients that we need to be healthy. We talked about the importance of keeping our heart healthy by making good choices such as eating right, exercising, drinking healthy drinks like milk and water, and also getting enough sleep at night. Next, students viewed informational text photos from a heart book, and the most exciting part of our lab was when we were able to view a REAL hog heart! Students were given the opportunity to hold the real heart, touch the heart, and some children even were able to put their finger in the aorta! It was fascinating, as the hog heart is very similar to a human heart! The Heart science lab was very exciting!
