Fifth Grade is learning a lot about force and motion! We are having fun exploring and experimenting with Newton’s first law of motion: an object at rest tends to stay at rest, and an object in motion tends to stay in motion… staying in motion in a straight line and at a constant speed…unless acted upon by an unbalanced force. Student began with a question: How do balanced and unbalanced forces affect the motion of an object? Following the scientific method, we then made predictions and formed a plan of discovery! Next, we put our learning into action with a “tug teams” experiment. Students used a string and paperclip apparatus attached to their lab tables while making three different observations about force and motion. We concluded that when an object is at rest, forces are balanced….and an unbalanced force results in movement. Exploring force and motion is fun!
