Class A uniforms are the most formal version, intended only for special events. It is the STARFLEET equivalent of a dress suit or formal gown. Given that these events are fairly rare, most members won't own a Class A uniform. If you do not own one, see the Alternatives section below.
There is only one set of Class A uniforms: the Dress Uniform (DU). All Class A uniforms are unisex. This uniform comes in three variants, depending on your rank.
The uniform can be purchased online or made to specifications. When making this purchase, be sure to get the correct variant for your branch of service and rank. If ordering online, it may be necessary to have the uniform fitted.
With the exception of wedding rings, no jewelry or other accessories (including hats, jackets, belt-pouches or gloves) may be worn without prior command approval. Sidearms are not worn with Class A uniforms, but Ceremonial Weapons may be authorised for use, as determined by the mission commander.
Examples of missions that might require a DU (as authorised by the mission commander):
Star Trek movie premiers;
Formal dinners;
Weddings;
Receptions.
Description: This variant consists of a long grey jacket with black trousers and ankle-length black formal boots.
Top: A light grey 1cm stripe flows down from the back of the neck, on either side of centre, to the bottom seam. At shoulder-height, a light grey 1cm stripe joins the vertical stripe on both sides, going all the way around the back, coming to 90 degree downward points on each sleeve.
Each cuff has three, parallel light grey 1cm stripes going all the way around. The collar has three, parallel light grey 0.5cm stripes going all the way around. There is branch-of-service colour piping along the edges of each cuff and the edge of the collar.
Bottom: Black trousers, with a 2cm light grey stripe all the way down the outside seam.
This may be substituted with a plain black kilt, worn with an optional plain black sporran. Any insignia upon the sporran must be approved by Command before it may be worn.

STARFLEET Name Badges may be worn with this uniform, as applicable. If so, they are worn on the right breast, opposite the commbadge.

The front panel is quilted horizontally, 2cm apart. It ends at belt-buckle height, 5cm above the points of the white jacket.
At shoulder-height, a gold 1cm stripe joins the vertical stripe on both sides, going all the way around the back, coming to 90 degree downward points on each sleeve. The white shoulder area, above the stripe, is quilted vertically, 3cm apart.
Each cuff has one 1cm stripe, in the branch of service colour, going all the way around 5cm from the edge of the cuff. There is branch-of-service colour piping along the edge of the collar.

If you are attending a function and command have ordered that Class A uniforms be worn, if you do not own a correct and accurate Class A uniform you have two options:
Substitute it with a Class B uniform. The Class B is sufficiently formal that it may serve instead of a Class A should the need arise. However, a Class C uniform should never be substituted.
Wear civilian dress instead. The civilian equivalent of a Class A uniform is, generally speaking, a dress suit (tuxedo) or a formal gown.
