Science Department
The Science Department manages functions relating to research and education.
Educational concerns include ongoing education activities, STARFLEET Academy courses, orientation and training content and keeping track of academic qualifications of the crew.
Research includes citizen science projects, study of popular culture and the study and discussion around Star Trek itself.
Below are the volunteer "Duty Station" positions that fall under the Science Department. Active members who don't wish to volunteer may request to be assigned to Science as a "Standard position" with no duties allocated.

Activities
The principle activities of the Science Department are, among other things:
Coordinating research projects
Scheduling and facilitating Star Trek watch parties, study sessions and quizzes;
Leading discussions on Star Trek studies;
Organising research missions such as movie nights, nature walks, star parties or public lectures;
Promoting engagement in citizen-science projects.
Overseeing education and training
Managing the Linguistics Challenge;
Tracking on-board certifications and courses;
Developing and maintaining course materials for on-board certifications;
Promoting engagement with STARFLEET Educational Services and STARFLEET Sciences.

Chief Science Officer
Captain Johan van Greunen
The Chief Science Officer (CSO) is the Department Head for the Science Department of the USS Dauntless. The Department Head acts as a communication conduit between the Command Department and the Science Department.
The CSO is the curator of the Dauntless' on board library and educational resources, and manages the creation of certification courses.
This position may not be held by an Enlisted member.
Duties and Qualifications
Duties
Curriculum Oversight: Operating the Certification Program for the crew:
Maintaining the Certification library
Working with relevant crew-members to administer certification courses
Working with relevant experts to produce new certification courses
Linguistics: Operating the Dauntless Linguistics Challenge for the crew:
Acting as a moderator for the online platforms used to conduct the challenge (Duolingo and the Discord channel);
Registering new participants in the challenge;
Assisting participants with technical issues on those platforms;
Tallying the monthly performance statistics and determining the monthly winner;
Announcing the monthly results of the challenge on or before the 3rd day of the following month.
Departmental Supervision: Maintaining open lines of communication with members of the Science Department. This requires attempting to have at least one communications exchange with each member of the Department per calendar month. This may be in the form of a face-to-face meeting, a telephone conversation, an Instant Message conversation, an email exchange or anything of a similar nature.
Reporting: Submitting Departmental Monthly Status Reports (DMSR) to the XO on or before the 3rd of each calendar month. This report must include information such as promotion nominations, award nominations, planned or past events when applicable, as well as the success or failure to contact members of the Department.
Logging: Write a regular column for the Crow's Nest.
Delegation: Performing any and all duties the Deputy Chief Science Officer is unable to perform.
Officer of the Watch: Monitor Dauntless communications channels during convenient hours and take swift action should any inappropriate content be posted or other issues arise.
Fleet Operations: Colaborating and coordinating with Science communities within Region 8 and STARFLEET International (STARFLEET Sciences).

Qualifications
In order to be considered, the applicant must already be an active participant in a bare minimum of 50% of all Dauntless Science activities measured over a 3-month time-frame. This must include online and in-person activities, as well as the monthly challenges. The applicant must also be an active user of Discord and Trello.

Grade O-2 (Lieutenant (Junior Grade)/Second Lieutenant) or higher.

Required within 6 months of appointment to position
PD-100 certification (STARFLEET Marine Corps Academy)
Privileges
Upon appointment, the Chief Science Officer is granted a conditional promotion to the grade of O-3 (Lieutenant/Marine Captain). After holding the position for 6 continuous months, the promotion becomes permanent.
The Deputy Chief Science Officer (DCSO) is the Deputy Department Head for the Science Department of the USS Dauntless. The Deputy Department Head acts as a reserve for the Department Head.
If held by an Enlisted member, use the title "Chief Science Non-Commissioned Officer" (CSNCO). The CSNCO is not in line to replace the CSO.

Privileges
For Deputy Chief Science Officer:
Upon appointment, the Deputy Chief Science Officer is granted a conditional promotion to the grade of O-3 (Lieutenant/Marine Captain). After holding the position for 6 continuous months, the promotion becomes permanent.
When the CSO position becomes vacant, the DCSO is automatically considered an applicant for the position, regardless of his/her qualifications.
For Chief Science Non-Commissioned Officer:
Upon appointment, the Chief Science Non-Commissioned Officer is granted a conditional promotion to the grade of E-7 (Chief Petty Officer/Gunnery Sergeant). After holding the position for 6 continuous months, the promotion becomes permanent.
