At Rebound, we value inclusivity and celebrate the diversity of our clients and team. Our Physiotherapist (Kate), has a special interest in working with the local LGBTQ+ community. You will have the opportunity to discuss and learn about queer health during your placement.
Discussing LGBTQ+ health will provide you with a judgement-free, open conversation. Please feel free to ask Kate about anything you are unsure about.
Please view the presentation below and then answer the subsequent questions.
Questions to answer in preparation for discussion:
How confident would you feel to support a client if they came out as queer or gender diverse, right now? (NOTE: there is no wrong answer to this question!)
If a client is wearing a binder, do you think it is safe for them to exercise? How might you communicate any concerns you may have?
Why do you think that understanding LGBTQ+ health is important, particularly for an NDIS population?
What is one thing you learned from the presentation?
Case Study:
Your client, Jane, tells you that she is questioning her gender identity. She has been experiencing dysphoria when looking at her body in a mirror and is finding she is uncomfortable with being in the gym.
From an administrative perspective, what considerations are there to make when it comes to writing notes, booking system, GP letters etc?
From a treatment perspective, what discussions or changes could you make to help your client feel more comfortable?
