Secondary Special Education Programming
The Renfrew County District School Board follows the Ministry of Education Identification Placement and Review Committee (IPRC) process for placement in special education program pathways. An Individual Education Plan (IEP) is designed for each student according to their individual learning needs and strengths.
Individualized programming is based on the learning expectations outlined in the IEP, which is developed and coordinated by the Special Education teacher in consultation with parent(s)/guardian(s)/student and other professionals. Programming is revised and updated based on the results of ongoing assessment and evaluation.
There are two IPRC placements - each of which includes a broad range of individualized programming: a Special Education Class with Partial Integration and a Full-Time Special Education Class.
Special Education Class with Partial Integration
A Special Education Class with Partial Integration allows students the opportunity to develop academic skills in a highly structured small class placement. Intensive instructional support is provided with the potential for modified or partial credit acquisition.
Student programming may include integration into credit class placements. Locally Developed, Applied, Open and/or Workplace level, as well as Cooperative Education courses, are among the range of program options.
The completion of the Ontario Secondary School Certificate or the Ontario Secondary School Diploma are possible graduation goals.
Full-Time Special Education Class
The goal of a Full-Time Special Education Class is to develop academic skills that centre both on functional literacy and numeracy, as well as appropriate daily living, social and employability skills. Students work in a highly structured, individualized learning environment.
Programming may include working with community agencies for transition planning to supported or independent living and/or employment opportunities.
The completion of the Ontario Certificate of Accomplishment is a possible graduation goal.
Please Note:
Students with a placement in a Special Education pathway may attend until June of the calendar year in which they turn 21.
