Continuing Education is a unique learning program at the Renfrew County District School Board. With multiple sites and pathways, it provides opportunities for students to experience a successful transition to five different destinations: high school diploma, employment, post-secondary, apprenticeship, and independence.
Students have the flexibility to achieve their goals using a progression from International Languages/ESL, then upgrading programs through Literacy Basic Skills, and finally to a variety of credit courses taught online with teachers available on-site for additional support.
Continuing Education offers several different programs including:
English as a Second Language (ESL),
Literacy and Basic Skills (LBS),
High School Credit Program, and,
Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition (PLAR).
ESL classes are for students whose first language is not English and who wish to develop skills in reading, writing, speaking, and listening. ESL classes are currently offered in Pembroke. Classes are available for eligible newcomers, including permanent residents and naturalized citizens. Students can enroll in a class at any time during the school year.
LBS is a non-credit program for adult learners 18+, and it can support learners in a variety of ways including:
Upgrading of language and math skills,
Developmental support programs,
Computer skills and employment readiness, and,
Preparation for PLAR testing.
The Continuing Education High School Credit program is available to all Renfrew County adult learners. Courses are offered at various times throughout the school year (September to June). Please contact the Continuing Education site closest to where you live to inquire about how to register for this program.
Previous Learning Assessment and Recognition (PLAR) is available to students working toward an Ontario Secondary School Diploma who are 18 or turning 18 in the current school year. PLAR is based on the number of credits previously achieved towards their OSSD, and their academic, work and life experience.
Grade 9 and 10 credits may be achieved by completing PLAR testing. Grade 11 and 12 credits may be granted based on students’ experiences that demonstrate the overall expectations of Ontario credit courses
