Students who may require special education supports can be referred to the Special Education Department at any time during their schooling. These referrals may be made by school principals, parents, teachers, or the students themselves. Formal and informal assessments are carried out to determine student strengths and needs.
Some students may be referred to an Identification, Placement and Review Committee (IPRC) set up by the school board. Access to special education services need not be limited to students identified through the IPRC process. RCDSB provides special education services to meet students’ educational needs and prepares an Individual Education Plan (IEP) to document the services and supports required. The principal of the student's school is responsible for ensuring that IEPs are prepared and maintained students that require them.
The RCDSB Parents' Guide to Special Education provides supplemental information to support parents/guardians with child(ren) in RCDSB schools. This Guide includes information on in-school assessments, curriculum modifications, the Identification, Planning and Review Committee (IPRC), programs and services, and Renfrew County organizations.
A copy of the guide is included to the right.
In Ontario, boards are required to establish a Special Education Advisory Committee (SEAC). These committees include two trustees and representatives from local parent associations.
SEAC provides specific information, advice, and assistance to parents whose children may require additional support. It makes recommendations to the Board concerning the establishment and development of special education programs and services. The Committee is comprised of member representatives from a variety of community agencies that provide services for children throughout Renfrew County.
SEAC meets ten times during the school year on the third Wednesday of the month at the Renfrew County District School Board (RCDSB) Administration Office from 3:00-5:00 pm. The meetings are open to the public.
