Punctual and regular attendance is an essential responsibility of each employee at Professional Meters Inc. Employees are expected to report to work as scheduled, on time and prepared to start working. Employees also are expected to remain at work for their entire work schedule. Late arrival, early departure or other absences from scheduled hours are disruptive and must be avoided.
This policy does not apply to absences covered by the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) or leave provided as a reasonable accommodation under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). These exceptions are described in separate policies.
"Absence" is defined as the failure of an employee to report for work when he or she is scheduled to work. The two types of absences are defined below:
Excused absence occurs when all the following conditions are met:
The employee provides to his or her supervisor sufficient notice at least 24 hours in advance of the absence.
The absence request is approved in advance by the employee's supervisor.
Unexcused absence occurs when any of the above conditions are not met. If it is necessary for an employee to be absent or late for work because of an illness or an emergency, the employee must notify his or her supervisor no later than the employee's scheduled starting time on that same day. If the employee is unable to call, he or she must have someone make the call.
An unexcused absence counts as one occurrence for the purposes of discipline under this policy.
Employees with three or more consecutive days of excused absences because of illness or injury must give Professional Meters Inc proof of physician's care and a fitness for duty release prior to returning to work.
Employees are expected to report to work and return from scheduled breaks on time. If employees cannot report to work as scheduled, they must notify their supervisor no later than their regular starting time. This notification does not excuse the tardiness but simply notifies the supervisor that a schedule change may be necessary.
Employees who must leave work before the end of their scheduled shift must notify a supervisor immediately.
Tardiness and early departures are each 1/4 an occurrence for the purpose of discipline under this policy.
Start time is 7:30pm, Departure time 5:30pm.
Excessive absenteeism is defined as two or more occurrences of unexcused absence in a 30-day period and will result in disciplinary action. Eight occurrences of unexcused absence in a 12-month period are considered grounds for termination.
Any employee who fails to report to work for a period of three days or more without notifying his or her supervisor will be considered to have abandoned the job and voluntarily terminated the employment relationship.
You will be issued Fire Retardant (FR) clothing. They may look like regular uniforms, but they are not. They must be taken care of properly. When washing them you cannot use just any laundry detergent, you must use special FR laundry soap or original plain Tide. When drying you should air dry or dry them separately with no dryer sheets. You cannot use fabric softener, scent boost, oxy of any kind or any other additives. Your FR clothing is pure cotton woven in a special way so that if an arch flash was to happen your clothes will get an initial burn but will not continue to burn. If you add anything such as softener or a dryer sheet you are adding oils which are a fuel source, you are now a walking candle.
Base layer garments need to be made of 100% natural material, wool, silk, cotton or Arch Rated “AR”, Do not wear nylon, polyester undergarments during electric work, may melt to skin in arch flash explosion.
No one should wear anything metal when working with electricity. This includes wedding rings (metallic or not), necklaces, bracelets, metallic body jewelry, regular or smart watches, anything that can conduct electricity. The reason is because if it is metallic, it can conduct electricity. Depending on the metal it could turn into a literal burner and cause bad burns if they come in contact with an energized circuit.
When you are at work you are representing Professional Meters Inc. We expect that you will keep your clothing and hair neat and clean and odor free. You will be interacting with our customers and we do want to make sure that we all come across as a professional, reputable company. You should always be in uniform with your ID badge visible. Your clothes should be free from dirt with as few wrinkles as possible and odor free. We understand that sometimes you can get dirty on the job but please be conscientious of how you are coming across to the customers that you come in contact with.
With the metering line of work, you find yourself mobile all day. Your office is your company vehicle. While you are working, be aware of your surroundings and prepare for your workday. Hydration and proper nutrition are very important but what comes in must go out. You must never, no matter how secluded you think you are “answer nature's call” at a customer’s house, in a customer’s yard, with your car door open to “hide”, while sitting in your car with a bottle or a cup. Pay attention as you work, go to a gas station, a convenience store, a rest area, a portable restroom, a pharmacy, or somewhere you are able to relieve yourself. If you are caught relieving yourself in public it could result in criminal charges such as urination in public, indecent exposure and you could find yourself on the sex offenders registry. This may be grounds for termination.
Dogs are man’s best friend and at the same time meter man’s biggest hazard. When making contact with a customer ask them to please secure their dog(s). Securing a dog does not mean they hold them on a leash or by a chain, securing them means they bring the dog inside the house or in the garage so you can do your job safely and not have to worry about an attack. Many people will tell you “oh my dog is just a big baby” or “my dog doesn't bite.” This may be true, but the reflective gear we wear bothers the dog’s eyes especially on a sunny day. Take into account that dogs are territorial, you are a stranger, and things can get bad.
Do not reach over a fence and pet a dog.
Do not enter a yard with a dog.
Dogs are protective, if there are small children ask that the customer bring in the kids and the dogs. A dog sees kids as their kids, if they see a stranger and their kids outside things can get bad. Dogs have broken out windows to protect their kids.
If you pull up to a house and the dogs are not in a fenced in yard, honk your horn to alert the owner.
The dog breed and size has no impact on the chances of being injured.
If it happens to be a neighbor’s dog or a roaming dog, call your Field Manager, he will call the appropriate person or agency.
Do not carry milk bones or treats to try to “befriend” the dog. You don’t know if the dog has an allergy.
The company does not issue dog spray and does not advise you carry dog spray. Avoiding a dog avoids a dog bite.
If you have to skip a house due to a dog, arrangements will be made from the utility with the customer to have the meter changed.
Dogs are not the only animal that can attack or injure you. There are many other animals people have as pets. Horses, chickens, geese, domestic and exotic cats, ostriches, emus, an alpaca are just a few examples.
If an animal poses a possible threat, ask the customer to restrain and isolate the animal.
It is not always pets that you should be alert to, there are also wild animals. Wild dogs, wolves, foxes, bears, snakes, wild cats just to list a few. If you encounter a wild animal stay calm, get to a safe area such as your vehicle as soon as possible. This is the only time it is acceptable to enter a shed, porch or house. If it is life or possible death, there are no limitations.
Stinging insects such as wasp, bees, yellow jackets and hornets are also very hazardous. If you have an allergy to stinging insects, you need to let your Field Manager know.
Many people have a concealed carry permit. PMI does NOT allow employees to carry a firearm in company vehicles nor on their person while on company time. Blade tools such as knives, box openers, and machetes are permitted as long as used as a tool. These items are not issued by the company and any accidents or injury sustained by sharp objects are not the responsibility of PMI.
