Upon arrival at a customer’s house pull your vehicle into a safe area not blocking traffic. Do not block or park in someone’s driveway. Do not pull up with your radio loudly playing, your radio should not be heard from outside of the vehicle. Look over your work orders and plan your next move.
The first thing you must do after you leave your vehicle is to put out your road cones. One cone in the front and one cone in the back.
If you are at an apartment complex, a church, a courthouse or a business complex do not park in a designated reserved parking spot, park somewhere out of the way.
Before leaving your vehicle make sure you have your uniform on correctly and neat. Make sure you have your ID badge on and obvious. Take your clipboard, have any paperwork on the board along with your letter of authorization. Inside of your clipboard should be door tags. With your bag, have the correct meter as listed on your work order. Double check you have all required PPE, tools, meter seals, extra rings etc. so that you need to make only one trip.
If you have to enter a gated community that is manned by a guard, show them your letter of authorization and badge. Let the guard know all the addresses in the area you are attempting. Be patient with the guards, it's not every day they have contractors trying to change electric meters in their neighborhood. If the guard does not allow you access into the area kindly say “thank you” turn around, call your supervisor and he will either come out and straighten out the situation or have the utility clarify with the guards.
If you are approaching an unmanned entrance, there are several varieties...
The “please insert your ID and wait for someone to get with you” box. Simply insert your driver’s license. Wait for the remote attendant to address you. Have your badge and letter of authorization available to show through the camera. Explain you are with the utility and changing several meters in the area. If there are any issues, call your Field Manager.
The “please type pin or dial by name” box. Call your Field Manager, he/she will have a list of pin numbers given to him/her by the utility.
DO NOT scroll through the box and just call random people. DO NOT tailgate a car in.
If you are sent to a school, go to the front office even if the school is not in session. Normally they will check your badge and letter of authorization, a principal will come talk to you and either escort you themselves or have a maintenance man come with you.
If you are sent to a church, always knock on the door, you never know if someone is there or not. Typically, a church will have a phone number on the sign. If not try searching for the church online and call the number listed. If no answer when knocking or calling feel free to change the meter as you would regularly.
