The Nat 3/4 course covers areas related to how business operate in society and what influences there can be on a business which can determine how it acts or reacts to changes in the business environment.

Pupils learn about the processes and procedures organsiations use to maintain competitiveness and how marketing to communicate with consumers.

Pupils learn about the human resources management and how employees contribute to the success of organisations.

Pupils learn about the basic theories and concepts relating to financial aspects of business when preparing and interpreting information to solve financial problems.

The Higher course develops pupils’ ability to apply knowledge and understanding of the impact of business activities on society and apply the ideas of ethical and effective business decision making to solve strategic business-related problems.
The main areas of study are:
Understanding Business
Pupils gain knowledge of different types of businesses in different sectors of economy and industry. They analyse the impact that internal and external environments have on an organisation’s activity and their stakeholders. Pupils also cover methods of growth, and business structures.
Management of Marketing
Pupils learn about the theories and concepts used to improve competitiveness and customer satisfaction. Pupils gain knowledge in market strategies, including the marking mix.
Management of Operations
Pupils learn about how organisations improve and/or maintain quality, and the importance of satisfying internal and external customers’ needs. Furthermore pupils analyse the ethics of manufacturing and different methods of production.
Management of People
Pupils learn about the theories and concepts relating to recruitment, training, retention and motivation of employees.
Management of Finance
Pupils learn about the concepts and procedures used by organisations in financial situations including cash budgets and final accounts. Furthermore, pupils gain an insight in to how both small and large organization source funding.

Course Assessment:
This is assessed through a Final Exam which is 75% of the final award and an Assignment Task which is 25% of the final award.

This course is designed to provide pupils with the fundamental knowledge required for success in current and future employment in the business and information technology sector or for progression to further academic qualifications.
The aim of this course is to develop pupils knowledge and understanding in the role of business in society, their knowledge and application of software packages such as excel spreadsheets, access databases and others, and to provide pupils with relevant core skills for business, administration and technology for employment and further study.
Course Outline
This National Progression Award is 100% based on course work. Pupils must attend and engage in lessons to be able to complete the unit assessments to the desired standards. There is no final SQA exam for this NPA. Pupils must complete and pass all 5 unit assessment.
