Don was an outstanding athlete at PHS in the 1950s and coached for most of his life in various sports at Pittsville High School.
Don was one of the first star athletes to grace the halls of PHS. He was an outstanding basketball and baseball player in the 1950s, as he was named All-Conference in both sports. Don even had a tryout with the Washington Senators. Listed below are some of his accomplishments:
• Served as girls varsity basketball head coach, assistant girls basketball coach, assistant boys basketball coach, assistant football coach, assistant baseball coach, assistant softball coach over a 30 year span.
• Took girls basketball team to sectional final; regional champs in 1987-88 and 1999-2000; Marawood basketball coach of the year in 1989-1990.

• All Conference in both basketball and baseball. One of the early great athletes in Pittsville history, played 4 years college baseball for UW-Stevens Point and semi-pro baseball for Wausau Barons, had tryout with MLB Washington Senators baseball team
