This section will provide students with an insight into the different technologies and advancements regarding wind turbines. The section begins with a look at the different parts of wind turbines and defining their role in a completed wind turbine. The next lesson looks at the uses of wind energy throughout history, and the changes in wind turbine technology over time. Students will see that harnessing the energy of the wind is not a new concept, but the technology for collecting and applying that energy has changed drastically over time. The wind turbines we have today, while rather uniform, have gone through many different iterations before scientists and engineers realized what works best. After studying how wind technology has developed over time, students will look at the type of turbine so far unexamined in this chapter: vertical axis wind turbines. These turbines are smaller, and less often seen, and have distinct advantages and disadvantages compared to horizontal turbines which students can explore.
