In this course students will engage and explore the STEM principles related to vertical, horizontal and hydro turbines. Students will gain an understanding of how fluids can be harnessed as a renewable energy source through research, engineering, and design activities. Using PicoOnline turbine materials, students will apply the scientific method, the engineering design process, and quantitative analysis to evaluate the effectiveness of hydro power as a renewable energy source for sustainable engineering.
Horizontal & Vertical Wind Turbines, & Hydro Turbine adaptors
Engineering Design Notebook
Creative Thoughts
Students will:
Explore the various uses for fluids.
Discuss where hydro and wind energy have been used.
Discuss the benefits and concerns behind to using alternative energy sources such as hydro and wind energy and whether or not it is an effective solution to the energy crisis.
Investigate methods of implementing and improving a hydro turbine.
How do engineers apply scientific knowledge in their designs?
What needs to be considered when designing the most efficient turbine? Do those considerations change based on the location? How can you tell?
What impact can installing a turbine have on a community (environmentally, socially, and economically)?
Students will be able to draw and explain the steps of the water cycle to discuss water's importance and impact on human life.
Students will be able to describe the form and function of a vertical, hydro and horizontal turbine.
Students will be able to discuss the history of hydro energy and the use of hydro turbines overtime related to their impact on society and the environment.
Students will be able to discuss the effects of utilizing wind power, weighing the pros and cons to wind as an alternatively energy source.
Students will be able to perform a statistical analysis based on a set of data related to turbine use in order to calculate and draw informed conclusions.
Students will be able to construct an efficient turbine and identify why their improvement is beneficial to society or the environment.
