Psychology of the Young Mind

Psychology of the Young Mind can be studied for only one year in EITHER Years 9 or 10.

This course is designed to develop in students the knowledge, understanding and skills to positively influence the wellbeing and development of children in the critical early years (0–8 years) in a range of settings and contexts. Through the medium of human psychology and the cognitive development of children it aims to provide students with the skills, appreciation and knowledge to:

  • Understand the Catholic perspective on family and conception to birth

  • Build knowledge about positive family interactions

  • Develop skills in relation to the basic requirements of caring for the young

  • Play with children and learn about their diverse needs

  • Learn about the development of the brain

  • Be prepared to nurture and protect children with regard to health and safety

  • Learn about children's developmental milestones and how to provide proper nutrition

This course will be useful to all students who are thinking about a career in early childhood, social work or psychology in the future. There will be guest speakers, practical nurturing projects, and a focus study on child psychology.
