In deciding which courses to undertake students should consider the following:
Abilities - choose courses in which you are capable of doing well.
Interests - choose courses, which interest you.
Motivation - choose areas, which you really want to study.
Careers aspirations and needs - be realistic about choices re: career and subjects.
Select your pattern of study carefully as most courses extend over two years.
Your decision should not be influenced by:
Your friends are taking it – your friend can have different abilities, interests, motivations and career aspirations to you.
Your favourite teacher is teaching it – teachers often change classes or schools.
You’ve heard it’s a “bludge” subject – chances are the person telling you this is “bludging” and will do poorly.
Boys / Girls don’t do that subject – there are no separate subjects for boys and girls, if you are good at or interested in it then do it.
The subject will boost the ATAR score - you will achieve a better result in a subject that you are passionate about.
Students are encouraged to consult with the following people in helping to make their choices:
Year 11/12 students from other schools: can talk about their experiences in particular subjects.
Subject teachers: can discuss your ability in a particular subject.
School Counsellor: can help by discussing study problems or any other concerns you may have.
Assistant Principals: can help with overall advice on requirements for HSC and ATAR
Parents: can help by discussing your ideas and supporting your decision.
