Stage 5

Design and Technology

Design and Technology can be studied as a one-year course or a two-year course and is open to students in Years 9 and 10.

The aim of Stage 5 Design and Technology is to apply knowledge of design processes, materials and tools in order to design, construct and critically evaluate functional products that solve authentic problems.

Knowledge

Students will develop knowledge of:

  • design processes

  • the impact of technologies on society, and the environment

  • the work of designers

  • trends that influence design


Skills

Students will develop skills to be able to:

  • innovate, create and critically analyse new products

  • communicate ideas with a range of audiences

  • use materials to producing quality products that solve authentic problems or design opportunities


Course Requirements

Students must complete between 2-4 design projects from at least two different context areas listed below:


  • Agriculture

  • Digital Technologies

  • Engineered Systems

  • Food Technologies

  • Material Technologies

  • Information and Communications Technologies


Students must document their learning through a design and production portfolio for each project. This will form part of the overall assessment of each project.

Students must comply with all Work Health and Safety practices when engaged in practical activities.
