In the busyness of life, work and navigating parenthood, it can be a real challenge to find time to pause, slow down and take time to reflect. It can be a difficult lesson to learn but to be at our best, we need to make these moments a priority.
We can create these mindful and reflective moments by practicing breathing techniques and engaging in meditation.
Here's how you can do it:
1. Find a quiet place where you can be still and comfortable for a few minutes.
2. Focus on intentionally being present in your surroundings and observe your senses. Ask yourself the following:
a) What can I hear? Listen for 3 things.
b) What can I see? Visually notice 3 things that stand out around you.
c) What can I feel? Start to notice the physical sensations around you.
3. Practice deep breathing and relaxation strategies.
Notice where there is tension in your body and focus on relaxing those areas and muscles. Perhaps you can start by relaxing your feet and move through all of your muscles, all the way up to your head.
Breathe in slowly through your nose and allow the lower part of your stomach to fill with air. Breathe air in for 4 seconds, hold the breath for 7 seconds and slowly exhale for 8 seconds. Repeat this cycle from 3 to 10 times. Notice how you feel at the end of the exercise.

It is important to know what your limits are and what pushes your 'big red button'. There will be times where the best thing you can do is take a deep breath, admit that you are the one not being fun, and put yourself in chill out.
Remember your children's brains are designed to watch you closely and mirror your emotions and behaviour; always check yourself first. That is why when a child falls if we react sad they cry, and if we react like it was no big deal they brush it off and keep playing. What are you reflecting today?
