“You do not control your children. You want to help teach them how to control themselves from the inside out.”

Brittney Serpell

LoKoP Course @ Parklands

Dear Parents and Caregivers,

Loving our Kids on Purpose is on again, and you’re invited.

“This program provided our family with some great insight into parenting techniques and what drives children’s behaviour/reactions while bringing the family closer together through love. We have absolutely seen a positive change in not only our children but our own relationship. Highly recommended!”

The Loving Our Kids On Purpose (LoKoP) course is pioneered by Danny Silk (Loving on Purpose Ministries) and aims to help parents understand their roles as parents, provide parents the skills to teach children how to manage increasing levels of freedom and learning to replace the tools of intimidation and control as a priority if we are to train our children in love.

LoKoP is delivered by a team of Parklands staff who are committed to leading you into an understanding of biblical parenting principles and a practical application of skills and techniques. The key topics that will be covered include introduction to loving on purpose, the language of empowerment, no fear in love, building personal responsibility and imparting strength and honour.

At Parklands the staff implement the LoKoP principles in connection with our behaviour education process (RTP). This provides a consistent language in the classroom across year levels. Parents who participate in LoKoP develop not only a greater understanding of our behaviour education approach, but also create a seamless cultural language between school and the home environment.

LoKoP is usually delivered three times per year and occur on Monday Nights 6.30pm – 8.30pm for the duration of 5 sessions. Participation in LoKoP is a one off payment of $20 per person or $30 per couple, payable via Administration. This payment will cover the delicious refreshments offered each session.

Parents are encouraged to purchase Danny Silk’s book “Loving Our Kids on Purpose” to compliment the learning and strategies presented during the course. This resource is available from Koorong book store or www.koorong.com for approximately $19.99. Alternatively the workbooks are available for purchase during the course.

The great news is there is more! Brittney has released an upgraded version of LoKoP called Parenting 101 Upgraded.

This is available via Life Academy and covers topics such as technology and sibling rivalry.

Brittney and Ben Serpell are the parents of three children and are navigating the teenage years. They share a house with Danny and Sheri (Brittney's parents) and are a wealth of wisdom not only from being brought up as a Silk, but also about co-living with family.

Create a Family Creed

Simple steps to creating a family culture creed! by Brittney Serpell

  1. Gather your family together to discuss some 'big idea' questions. Make it fun, add popcorn and skittles to encourage participation.

  2. Get a poster board or something fun that you can all sit around and write down ideas/words as you brainstorm together. Remember there are no right or wrongs!

  3. Ask these questions

  • what are our strengths or what are we really good at?

  • what is the passion or what do we love as the "Smith Family"?

  • What do we want to be famous for or what will be the legacy of our family?

  1. Now take all the words given for each question and see what sentence or statement you can make for each one. This can take a few sessions and time, there is no rush. Eg 'The strength of our family is loving, helping and protecting people'.

  2. Once you have your statements bring the family together to review it and see how everyone feels.

  3. The next big step is to put it somewhere for everyone to see. You can have your creed framed, carved into wood, displayed as artwork, think big and beautiful. Then display it in your living room or an area that everyone uses regularly.

Have fun building your family creed. If you notice the meeting getting too crazy or intense have a back up movie plan or game prepared and come back to building your creed another time. You are building culture together so don't get sucked into the drama of chaos.
