Please carefully review the new guidelines here.
While students are allowed to bring tech devices (such as smartphones and watches, tablets, e-readers, earphones etc.) to school, they will not be allowed to use them on campus (including before school, break time, lunchtime, and after school), unless specifically instructed by a teacher.
This means that
The device has to be switched off.
The device has to be placed in the student’s backpack/bag and not in the student’s pocket.
Headphones/earphones may not be used.
This policy also applies to all smart devices and wearable technology.
This policy is grounded in research that highlights the benefits of minimising distractions and fostering deeper connections among students:
Improved academic performance:
Studies have shown that students who do not use their phones during school hours achieve higher academic performance. A study published in the journal Educational Psychology found that students without access to mobile phones had better exam scores and improved attention spans. You can read the UNESCO recommendations for schools about phone use here and how they assist in enhancing academic performance and social interactions.
Enhanced social interaction:
Research indicates that limiting phone usage encourages face-to-face interactions, which are crucial for developing social skills and building meaningful relationships. According to a study by the London School of Economics, schools that enforced phone bans reported significant improvements in student behaviour and social interactions.
Reduced anxiety and stress:
The constant presence of mobile phones can contribute to increased anxiety and stress levels among students. A study by the University of Illinois found that reduced screen time led to lower stress levels and improved overall well-being.
