04. Using quizzes
Quizzes in Moodle can be automatically graded online. Automatic grading also allows you to instantly grasp response status and check the quiz results before classes so that you can go over the most missed questions in the actual class hours.
Moodle supports a variety of question types as shown on the right table. Assuming students use the online grading feature while self studying, the “select from the list” type or “fill in the blank” type questions might be the mostly referred such as "Multiple choice", "True/false", "Matching" and "Embedded answers (Cloze)".
After entering edit mode, click the "+ button" and "Activity or Resource" in the section to display a list of available activities and resources. Click "Quiz" from among them.
Set the "Name" and "Description" of the quiz. If necessary, enter the duration of the quiz, important points, etc. in the "Description".
"Timing" sets the period and time limit for taking the quiz.
A. You can set the publication date and time of the quiz (this can be set by checking "Enable"; same below).
B. You can set the end date and time of the quiz. Questions can only be answered up until the "Quiz End Date and Time".
C. By setting a "time limit", you can conduct a quiz with a time limit during the quiz period. Note that students cannot answer questions after the quiz end date and time, so depending on when students start taking the test, the actual test time may be shorter than the set time limit.
D. In "If the time limit has elapsed", you can set how to handle unsubmitted quizzes.
《The "When time expires" setting 》
If a student is in the middle of a quiz (on the page where the countdown timer is displayed) when the closing time of the quiz (or time limit) is reached, their responses will automatically submitted on the closing time when the quiz is over. Conversely, if the student is away from the quiz page (logged out, etc.) and has not submitted the answer when the closing time (or time limit) is reached, you can set the quiz how to react by adjusting the "When time expires" setting. The setting choices are as below.
1. If you select " Open attempts are submitted automatically ", responses are automatically submitted at the closing time.
2. If you select " There is a grace period when open attempts can be submitted, but no more questions answered", students are able to submit their responses within the grace period (new responses cannot be submitted).
3. If you select " Attempts must be submitted before time expires, or they are not counted ", students are not able to submit responses after the Close the quiz (responses will not be submitted and the quiz will be treated as untaken).
Grading settings
The Grading field is for setting the "Attempts allowed" and the "Grading method". "Grading method" is for when the quiz can be retried.
Setting Question behaviour
The Question behaviour field is for adjusting the question behaviour. By default, this is set to "Deferred feedback" which allows students to receive correct answers and feedback after submitting their responses. After adjusting, save the new settings by clicking "Save and return to course" at the bottom of the screen.
" How questions behave " settings
Deferred feedback (default setting)
Displaying correct answers and feedback after all quiz responses have been submitted.
Immediate feedback
Judging whether a response is correct or incorrect and displaying the correct answer as well as feedback when students submit each response and click the "Check" button. Responses cannot be resubmitted even if they are incorrect, and the quiz will proceed to the next question.
Adaptive mode
Judging whether a response is correct or incorrect and displaying feedback when students submit each response and click the "Check" button. Responses can be resubmitted if they are incorrect. However, students’ scores will be penalized every time an incorrect response is submitted.
Adaptive mode (no penalties)
Judging whether a response is correct or incorrect and displaying feedback when students submit each response and click the "Check" button. Responses can be resubmitted if they are incorrect. There are no penalties for resubmitting responses.
Interactive with multiple tries
The correct/wrong evaluation runs for each response by clicking the "Check" button after responding. When a response is incorrect, a "Try again" button will be displayed with a hint, and students can re-answer the question. A hint is displayed on each attempt, and students can retry the question as many times as hints set for the question (needing to be set in "Attempts allowed"). Though students’ scores will be penalized every time an incorrect response is submitted.
(CMB)
CMB stands for Certainty-Based Marking. When submitting their answer, students select one of three levels of certainty toward their answer along with their answer itself. The higher certainty they claimed the higher the score they are going to gain when the answer is correct, but if the answer is incorrect, the score is going to be greatly deducted.

【How to Set Penalties】
If you have selected "Adaptive mode" or "Interactive multiple attempts" in "Question behaviors" when setting the quiz, students will be able to answer multiple times during a single quiz. In such a case, you can set the percentage of points that will be deducted for each mistake as a penalty for incorrect answers in "Multiple attempts". The penalty is set to 33.3% on the screen, meaning 0.67 points will be given for the correct response after responding incorrectly once. 0 points will be given for the correct response after responding incorrectly three times in a row instead of a negative score.
※If the testing mode is set to "Interactive multiple attempts", responses can be resubmitted for as many hints provided.
Click "Save and display" at the bottom of the screen to save the question you have created, and the question you just created will be added to the quiz you are editing.
“Review options” settings
For setting the information presented to the user in a quiz review.
When to display a review
During the attempt
Displaying it each time a question is answered (Available only for adaptive mode and interactive multiple attempts).
Immediately after the attempt (two minutes)
Displaying it within two minutes after the quiz is completed (after responses are submitted).
Later, while the quiz is still open
Displaying it when the quiz is accessed again within the quiz period (the period set for the timing) after the student completes the quiz.
After the quiz is closed
Displaying it when the quiz is accessed after the quiz period set in "Timing" (Available setting only when the quiz Due date is enabled).
Feedback types
Specific feedback
The feedback displayed according to the response selected by the student. It corresponds to the following two kinds of choice. Both are capable of being set from the edit screen of the question.
One is the feedback that is set for the response options in the question. It is displayed when the response is selected.
The other is the feedback set in the "Combined feedback" for the question. It is displayed according to correct and incorrect responses.
General feedback
This can be set at "General feedback" on the quiz edit screen. This is to display for each question after the quiz no matter if the response is correct or incorrect. It can be used to give an explanation of the question.
Overall feedback
This can be set at "Overall feedback" on the quiz edit screen. This is to display for the overall after the quiz. You can change the feedback according to the student's score.
《Grayed-out checkboxes》
In the review options, checkboxes that are grayed out and cannot be selected are disabled.
If you want to show students the grayed-out items at the target timing, you can select the checkboxes by setting each timing.
