Navigation Aids

Radar (and other broadcasting tools) are also used to help an aircraft navigate while in flight.

Primary Radar: radiates by a short burst of super high frequency radio energy from a spinning antenna, and receives the signal back when it hits an aircraft. Limited - only tells the system something is there.

Secondary Radar: detects a device on board an aircraft called a transponder. It broadcasts an information package when it detects an interrogation signal. Gives a SQUAWK (ID) code and altitude.

ADS-B (Automatic Dependent Surveillance – Broadcast): Automatic because it periodically transmits information with no pilot or operator involvement required. Regular transponders are too large for a drone. Can send and receive information. NOT CURRENTLY ALLOWED IN CANADA ON DRONES.
