Roles and Responsibilities

During any drone operation, the pilot and anyone who is a part of the flying activity or operation must know what they are responsible for during the flight in order to ensure the safe operation of the drone.

Remote Pilot: A person charged by the RPAS service provider with duties essential to the operation of a Remotely Piloted Aircraft System and who manipulates the flight controls, as appropriate, during flight time.

PIC (Pilot in Command): person who has final authority and is responsible for the operation and safety of flight. This can change during the flight.


Visual Observer's Role: inform pilot of hazards (land or air)

Remotely Piloted Aircraft Systems Commander: A trained and competent person who is responsible for the conduct and safety of a specific flight and for supervising the person in direct control of the RPAS.  

Team Member: An individual who forms part of the RPAS team. This includes RPAS pilots, RPAS service provider and designated members of where a flight is made from.
