Unit Objectives

By the end of this unit, students will be able to: 

• Explain the difference between simple and compound time. 

• Identify compound time signatures in repertoire and correctly beam a rhythm in 6/8, 9/8, or 12/8. 

• Notate, transcribe, perform, and compose a rhythm in compound time with dotted half, dotted quarter, quarter, and 8th note values. 

• Aurally identify the simple or compound meter used in an example from the repertoire.
