Course Content

Unit 1: Pitch Notation

• Clef notation, note ID on the staff and keyboard, pitch octaves, clef transposition, whole & half steps, and aural pitch matching and contour ID.

Unit 2: Simple Time

•  Rhythmic Notation, time Signatures, beaming, meter transposition, and aural meter ID and dictation with simple time signatures. 

Unit 3: Major Keys

• Major scales and key signatures, solfege & curwen hand signs, major key dictation with stepwise melodies, scale degree ID, transposition. 

Unit 4: Minor Keys

• Minor scales and key signatures, melodic dictation in minor, minor scale degree ID, transposition in minor Keys. 

Unit 5: Intervals

• Constructing and identifying simple and compound intervals, rhythmic dictation and performance with 8th notes. 

Unit 6: Triads

• Triad ID and construction in root position and with inversions, lead sheet symbols, figured bass notation, and melodic and rhythmic sight-singing and dictation with dotted quarter notes and skips between Do, Mi/Me, and Sol. 

Unit 7: Compound Time 

• Rhythmic notation, time signatures, beaming, meter transposition, aural meter ID and dictation in compound time. 

Unit 8: 7th Chords 

• 7th chord ID and construction in root-position and with inversions, lead sheet symbols, and figured bass notation. 

Unit 9: Roman Numerals

• Roman numeral chord construction and ID with triads, chord dictation with root-position I, IV, and V, chord transposition
