By the end of this lesson, students will be able to:
Identify rhythmic symbols and durations including note shapes, rests, dots, and ties by name.
Compare and determine equivalence between different rhythmic notation values.
Apply correct stem direction to single and beamed notes on the staff.

Determining Stem Direction: In groups, flip through melodic examples in the anthology to study tendencies for stem direction. Respond to the following questions:
When a single note appears on the staff, how do you determine which direction the stem should go (up or down)? What about the note on the middle line?
When a note is beamed to another note, how do you determine the stem direction (especially if one of those notes should be stemmed down and the other up)?
Rhythm Equations: The instructor states a rhythmic value (e.g. "half note" or "8th rest"). Students have to come up with at least 4 different ways to add or subtract rhythmic values to arrive at the stated value.
Ex. If the rhythmic value is "half note," a student might construct the value with: [♩+ ♫ ] or [ Whole note - half note] or [♬♬ + ♬♬] or [Dotted half note - ♩].
For an extra challenge try to use at least 3 different types of rhythmic values into your equation, try incorporating dots or double dots into your values, and creating longer equations that incorporate both addition and subtraction.
Be sure to practice with both notes and rests!
Rhythm Equivalence: Work through p. 3 of this worksheet and/or the top of this worksheet in groups.
Select a few examples from the anthology here that include errors in stem direction. Rewrite the melodies using correct stemming.
