Born in Pittsburgh at Magee Women’s Hospital, Tom Cassidy a true yinzer through and through. Went to Penn State to study Pure Mathematics where he simultaneously completed over 1200 hours of peer tutoring. His love for math and tutoring lead him into his initial career of teaching High School math in St. Petersburg Florida for 5 years, where he primarily focused on AP Courses during school, and coaching Track and Field afterwards. During his teaching tenure Tom started taking actuarial exams just to see if he could pass them and, upon doing so, transitioned into the career finding himself in his first, and only, role at UPMC starting in 2018. Credentialed after 4 years of exams in 2020, Tom is an Associate with the Society of Actuaries (ASA) as well as a member of the American Academy of Actuaries (MAAA).
As an Actuary at UPMC he spends his days working on the reserves team with his specialties including seasonality, creating and optimizing models, and leading the departments student program. In his free time you can find him either performing with the Pittsburgh Steeline at Steeler home games and associated events, or lounging around on his couch crocheting.
