Alysa Ambrose is a retired Captain who served as an officer in the US Navy for 25 years. Her career began after graduating from Carnegie Mellon University where she was a member of the NROTC program. She was one of the first groups of women to be able to serve on combatants and was often the first female in her assignments. She served on the Chief of Naval Operations Staff and Joint Staff ashore, and afloat on six ships, including USS GRAVELY, assuming command of the destroyer from 2014-2016. Throughout her career, she deployed six times, including twice aboard GRAVELY to Easter Mediterranean and Middle Eastern hot spots. She last worked as Chief of Staff of the Assessments Division on the Navy Headquarters Staff at the Pentagon before retiring and moving back home to the Pittsburgh area with her three children. She is currently enrolled at Duquesne Law School.

Captain Alysa L. Ambrose is a native of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and a graduate of Carnegie
Mellon University, where she was commissioned through the NROTC program and earned a
Bachelor of Science Degree in Psychology and Social History.
Afloat, Captain Ambrose completed division officer tours as Electrical and Repair Officer in USS
PELELIU (LHA 5) and as commissioning Combat Information Center Officer and Assistant
Operations Officer in USS HIGGINS (DDG 76). As a department head, she served as Operations
Officer and Senior Watch Officer aboard USS SPRUANCE (DD 963), USS HALYBURTON
(FFG 40), and USS PHILIPPINE SEA (CG 58), deploying in GWOT Surge ’05.
Captain Ambrose reported to USS GRAVELY (DDG 107) on deployment in May 2013 and
assumed command in December 2014. She led the ship through a basic phase training cycle and
a comprehensive Board of Inspection and Survey (INSURV) assessment before deploying with
the TRUMAN Carrier Strike Group. Under her leadership GRAVELY earned the Battle
Effectiveness Award and Golden Anchor for Retention Excellence for two consecutive years.
Ashore, Captain Ambrose’s assignments included tours in the Navy Staff, Director of Strategy
and Policy (N5), Chief of Naval Personnel Command, Total Force Manpower Requirements
(N12), US Joint Forces Command, Joint Capability Development (J86), and the Joint Staff, Force
Analysis (J31). Captain Ambrose’s final assignment was serving as the Chief of Staff,
Assessments Division (N81) in the Navy Staff Headquarters.
Captain Ambrose attended the Naval Postgraduate School, earning a Master of Arts Degree in
National Security Affairs, Regional Security Studies, Middle East. She completed Joint
Professional Military Education Phase I and II, and was designated as a Joint Specialty Officer.
She was a fellow in the MIT Seminar XXI class of 2017-2018.
Captain Ambrose’s personal decorations include the Legion of Merit, Defense Meritorious
Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal (2), Navy Commendation Medal (5), Navy
Achievement Medal (4), and various unit, campaign, and service medals.
