Here is the link from this session: Mr. Matt Walker
According to social norms, I’m about one-quarter of the way through my working career, and I’ve seen and done a lot. I began my career in sports, designing graphics, creating animations, and editing videos. With the Pittsburgh Pirates, I worked my way from being an intern to managing the department, overseeing two full-time staff members and over 30 game-day employees. During more than six full-time years and now starting my 17th year in baseball with the Pirates and Atlanta Braves, I worked nearly every day with various technologies like the Adobe Creative Suite, including Photoshop, Premiere, and After Effects.
After obtaining my M.S. from Duquesne University in Web Design & Development, I began working at Giant Eagle as a front-end developer. Technologies I used on a daily basis included HTML, CSS, and jQuery/Javascript. I helped manage our websites, updating content for each brand using a CMS. I also worked on larger projects like Curbside Express, building out new features and maintaining the front-end code and stylesheets.
At North Allegheny School District, I wear many hats. I oversee our District website, including subsites for all 13 of our schools. I shoot and edit videos for internal and external communications. Many times those videos include graphics and animations that I design. Sometimes, I even get to play photographer for events at our schools. I help write nearly all of the communications that are sent out by the District. One of my favorite parts of this job is being able to use all of the skills I have acquired over the years.
I also continue to work in sports entertainment, freelancing at events that include the International Champions Cup and the NCAA Basketball Tournament.
I’ve done a lot in my career, but I’m not nearly finished. Every day brings a new challenge and an opportunity to learn, evolve, and grow as a person and as a professional. I am really excited to share my experiences with our NA students and hope I can help them in their own career journeys.
